4. Be Professional.

One of the biggest reasons men are more likely to be promoted than women has more to do with what’s above the belt, rather than below it. Women get less constructive criticism (and therefore less opportunities to improve), because they are more likely to take criticism personally than men.
Be professional. If your boss skirts around giving you feedback, ask her directly: “I would greatly appreciate any honest feedback so that I may improve my work.” When you speak from a professional place, it will let her know you’re professional.

5. Look Out For Your Own Interests.

Always have your back. This means developing an acute awareness of the consequences of your actions and words.
This covers the scope of everything—big and small. The next time you are tempted to hit the snooze button, weigh the cost and benefit: showing up late and risking your supervisor’s trust versus a few extra minutes in bed. Always ask yourself: how much will this hurt me in the future?
When it comes to self-criticism, if you don’t have anything nice to say about yourself, just don’t say anything bad. Just remember that words are a powerful thing and associating yourself with negativity will subconsciously give your boss reasons not to trust you. For example, instead of saying “I was so nervous”, say “That could have been stronger”, or instead of “I screwed up”, say “I could have been more clear.”
