Crave Exercise!

Exercise should be something you look forward to, something you crave!

Killing yourself on the Stairmaster for an hour is a surefire way to set yourself up for…the couch. Why? Because when you associate exercise with pain your mind (and body) have every reason to shut down at the mere thought of the word “stair”.

Furthermore, it’s important to know that pushing yourself too hard too soon puts your body into temporary shock. Not only do you retain water, but your body suddenly NEEDS that extra piece of chocolate cake, and you give in because you “earned” it. Truth is, our bellies usually consume more calories than we can justify in one work out session.

The best policy for exercise is steady but consistent effort. If you’re just starting out, head on the treadmill for 10 minutes at a light jog, do some weights and then jump on the elliptical for another 10 minutes.

This part is important: Finish your workout when you feel MORE energetic than when you started. This way, you will avoid the impulsive binge-eating and give your body time to catch up.

Keep your body and mind engaged during exercise. If that means pushing yourself a little harder one day, or changing your routine the next, then do it! Just remember that there are no rules or markers you need to hit. As long as you put in the time and effort consistently, you will naturally come to enjoy exercising and appreciate its immediate and long-term benefits.

It’s additionally important to reform an all-or-nothing attitude about exercise because it will train you to think in the long term. You need to understand that getting in shape and losing weight are long term goals that you want to maintain, not bounce back from.

With that mindset you’ll understand that some days you’ll push yourself less and other days you’ll be going for the gold.
