FACE

What seems apparent to us, researchers have qualified through numbers. Here are the factors at work that determine the difference between a beautiful face and an average one.

Symmetry: The human eye is naturally drawn to symmetry and there’s a biological reason behind it. Asymmetry in human faces is the result of something gone wrong during key developmental stages in the womb. Scientists theorize asymmetry is visible evidence that the person was not physically adept enough to handle stressors during early development. The preservation of facial symmetry therefore indicates healthy genetics that are able to withstand environmental factors.

Ratio: The “golden ratio” refers to the ideal ratio of the length of the face to the width of the face, and comes out to be around 1.6. Not technical enough? The face should also be divided into three equal pieces vertically: the forehead, the bottom of the forehead to the nose, and then the nose to the chin. Additionally, the height of the lips should be ideally half of its width.

Bone Structure: A woman’s face with a narrower and smaller lower face is considered attractive to men. This is because estrogen actually caps bone growth in a woman’s lower face and chin. A relatively small brow is also a more attractive trait as it allows for the eyes to be more prominent.

Fertility: Not only do women smell more attractive during ovulation, they’re faces are more attractive during this small window of the month. Whether it’s due to a radiant complexion or a more welcoming countenance, researchers aren’t certain.

Makeup: Almost all men find women to be more attractive with a full face of makeup than with no makeup at all. While men prefer women with full eye make-up and foundation, lipstick was not necessarily a beauty enhancer. However, the greater the contrast between the darkness of the eyes and lips to the surrounding skin was reported as the most attractive variable. When women caked on the makeup to achieve this look? Not so attractive.
To get the look men find the most appealing, enhance your eyes on a natural finish and top your lips with a subtle tint. Need help finding your true match? Here is a guide to finding your perfect drugstore foundation. Make sure you blend well, starting from the center of your face and down your neck. See Foundation Rules for more flawless finishing tips. Next, apply a good charcoal eyeliner to make your eyes pop. Lastly, add a hint of color to your lips with a lip tint like this Lip Brush from PIXI Beauty.

BODY

Open any magazine. It’s not a mystery what physical traits men find to be the most appealing in a woman’s body. Here they are broken down by science:

Ratio: While it’s popularly accepted that the ideal waist-to-hip ratio for a woman comes in around 0.7, this number actually varies from country to country. For example in China, South America and some parts of Africa, the ideal is observed to be 0.6. In general, however, a range of .67 to 1 in females can be perceived as attractive to men.
The reason the waist to hip ratio is so important is because the areas in which fat is deposited through our bodies is largely determined by sex hormones (testosterone in men and estrogen in women). Theoretically, if a woman produces the right amount of estrogen her waist-to-hip ratio will naturally fall into the ideal 0.7. Studies have also shown that women with this waist-to-hip ratio, regardless of weight are less susceptible to disease like cardiovascular disorders, cancer and diabetes. Regardless of this finding, the most important body measurement to men, regardless of hip size, is a small waist.

BMI: The body mass index, a measure of both height and weight, is just another parameter to qualify what we already know. According to research, the optimal BMI for women has been found to be around a low 20.85.

Legs: It’s no secret that long legs are found to be universally attractive in women, and there’s a scientific reason behind this. Longer relative leg length is associated with reduced risks of heart disease, cancer and diabetes, and lower blood pressure. If you aren’t naturally leggy, time to invest in some nude stilettos.
