Liu Wen was the first fully Asian model to strut down the Victoria’s Secret fashion show this past Tuesday. “I was surprised…I asked my agent if she was joking. I didn’t think an Asian girl would get this job,” said Wen.

Though it sounds like a rather modest feat that an Asian woman appear barely clad on the silver screen, the elite beauty status that Victoria’s Secret models enjoy worldwide is what makes Liu Wen’s appearance a notable step in the right direction.

Her debut is part of a growing trend toward Asian models, but unlike Devon Aoki who made her debut a few years earlier, Liu Wen seems to actually represent Asian beauty rather than a western perception of Asian exoticism.

The 21 year old was originally studying to be a teacher in China when she entered a modeling contest in hopes of winning a computer to assist her studies: “The prize was a computer, and I needed a computer for school. So I entered the contest, too, and then I won.”

Soon after, Wen moved from Yongzhou to Beijing where her modeling career took off. She appeared on the covers of magazines like Vogue China and was soon walking the runways of Milan, Paris and New York in 2008.

Wen hopes she may transition her modeling career into acting, but sounds just as content with returning to China to become a teacher. “In the classroom everyone respects the teacher,” Wen said. “But for now modeling is such great fun. I’m still trying out new sexy faces.”
